When technicians need to access a workgroup computer that is not domain-joined, there can be an edge case that prevents login entirely.
This typically occurs when:
- Technician admin accounts exist on the machine
- Those accounts are hidden from the Windows login screen which can be done with TechIDAgent.exe hideonloginscreen
- Windows only displays login tiles for non-hidden users
- There is no option to manually enter a username and password
In this situation, technicians are effectively locked out.
To solve this, TechIDManager provides the User Password Tile, now fully integrated into the TechIDAgent.Windows.
What Is the User Password Tile?
The User Password Tile by TechIDManager is an additional login tile that appears on the Windows login screen alongside the standard user tiles.
When selected, it allows a technician to:
- Manually enter a username and password
- Log in using:
- A technician account
- A local admin account
- Any valid account on the machine
- Authenticate online or offline
This enables full login functionality in environments where Microsoft Windows does not provide the “Other User” tile that allows username/password entry.
How This Differs From the Tech Login Tile
It’s important to distinguish between the two TechIDManager login tiles:
Tech Login Tile (see full guide here)
- Allows technicians to select a user
- Automatically injects the password
- Requires the machine to be online
User Password Tile (This Feature)
- Prompts for manual username and password entry
- Supports typing or copy/paste
- Works online or offline
- Mirrors the functionality of the standard Windows “Other User” tile
Enabling the User Password Tile
The User Password Tile is enabled directly from the TechIDManager agent on the machine.
Enable the Tile
Run the following command on the endpoint from an admin cmd prompt.
techidagent.exe userpasswordtile
Once enabled:
- The User Password Tile by TechIDManager will appear on the Windows login screen
- Technicians can select it and manually authenticate
The agent will show the setting as:
User Password Tile: Yes
Disabling the User Logon Tile
If you no longer want the tile to appear, you can disable it with the following command:
techidagent.exe nouserpasswordtile
After disabling:
- The tile is removed from the login screen
- The agent will reflect:
User Password Tile: No
When to Use This Feature
Use the User Logon Tile when:
- Machines are not domain-joined
- Technician accounts are hidden, this can be done with TechIDAgent.exe hideonloginscreen
- Windows does not allow manual credential entry
- Offline access is required
- You need a reliable fallback login method for service access
